At least 15 people tragically lost their lives, and at least 30 people were injured after a crazed individual intentionally drove a truck into a crowd at Bourbon and Canal streets in New Orleans on New Year’s Day in what has been described as a terrorist attack, according to the FBI.
It happened just after 3 am, toward the end of New Year’s celebrations and just hours before the expected kickoff of the Allstate Sugar Bowl, a college football quarterfinal held in the city’s Caesars Superdome.
The FBI confirmed the identity of the suspected driver of the truck as Shamsud Din Jabbar.
It appears he was not alone in causing chaos in the city.
Investigators in New Orleans on Wednesday found two homemade bombs, per Gabriella Killet of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
What makes matters even more frightening is that a second vehicle was following the truck, and it was registered to the truck’s driver.
New Orleans authorities have footage of three men and one woman placing the first device.
The other people involved are currently on the run. It is unknown if cops have identified them.
Sugar Bowl In New Orleans Postponed For 24 Hours
The attack in New Orleans changed a lot of things.
The senseless attack forced the postponement of the Allstate Sugar Bowl, which was delayed by a day and rescheduled from Wednesday evening to Thursday afternoon.
The game will still be played at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, as kickoff won’t be until 4 pm ET.
The Georgia Bulldogs will face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and whoever wins will face Penn State on Jan. 9 at the Orange Bowl.
