Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, along with their dog on Wednesday.
Foul play was initially ruled out, but investigators quickly reversed that statement, calling the deaths “suspicious” and stating that an investigation was ongoing.
Their deaths have been subject to much speculation once news came out that they were found in different rooms of the home, and Arakawa’s body was mummified and bloated.
After the couple were found dead in their New Mexico home, their bodies were “transported to the Office of the Medical Investigator,” the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a news release.
“An autopsy was performed,” the statement said.“Initial findings noted no external trauma to either individual.”
Aside from that, the Santa Fe Fire Department had already ruled out Gene Hackman and his wife dying of carbon monoxide poisoning. Santa Fe fire personnel and the New Mexico Gas Company tested the home, but they didn’t detect any signs of a toxic leak at the house.
“New Mexico Gas Company responded to the residence and was conducting active testing on the gas line in and around the residence,” an affidavit read, per the NY Post.
“As of now there are no signs or evidence indicating there were any problems associated to the pipes in and around the residence.”
Officials Find Prescription Pill Bottle Scattered After Gene Hackman And Wife Found Deceased

Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, suffered “no external trauma,” according to preliminary findings from a medical investigation.
The Oscar-winning film star and his wife, Arakawa, were found dead, along with one of their dogs, at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico on Wednesday.
Police said there were no apparent signs of foul play, but they found something noticeable.
Authorities said the deaths were “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation” after not only finding the door to the couple’s home was “unsecured and opened” but also stumbling on an open orange prescription pill bottle and pills scattered around the room.
Those pills were found near Hackman’s wife, and one of their German shepherd dogs were discovered.
