REPORT: “Momentum Building” As Dallas Cowboys Appear Ready To Make Shocking Head Coaching Hire That No One Saw Coming

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is hardly a man of surprises, but he’s reportedly looking at Brian Schottenheimer of all people to replace Mike McCarthy as his head coach.

Jones and McCarthy were unable to reach an agreement on an extension following the expiration of his five-year deal last week. The Cowboys have interviewed Schottenheimer, Robert Saleh Leslie Frazier, Deion Sanders and Kellen Moore (their former offensive coordinator) for the OC position.

But amid all the speculation that Jones really wants Prime Time to leave Colorado for Dallas, it sounds like the polarizing Cowboys owner is planning to make a surprise hire that would truly stun the football universe.

During an appearance on 93.3 KJR Radio in Seattle, Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports reported that “there’s definitely momentum building” for Brian Schottenheimer to take over as the Cowboys’ next head coach.

Schottenheimer replaced Moore as the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator in 2023, following McCarthy’s questionable decision to move on from the current Philadelphia Eagles’ OC.

Though Schottenheimer was assigned the OC title, McCarthy actually took over play-calling duties after Moore’s departure. Dallas finished with the No. 1 scoring offense in 2023 (29.9 points per game), but that number dropped to 21st (20.6 PPG) in 2024 with quarterback Dak Prescott missing most of the season.

Brian Schottenheimer Would Be A Strange Hire By Cowboys

In the NFL, Schottenheimer has been employed as the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets (2006 to 2011), St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams (2012 to 2014) and Seattle Seahawks (2018 to 2020).Schottenheimer wasn’t even Dallas’ play-caller in 2023 or 2024, so how exactly does Jerry know if this man is suited for the head coaching position? It would certainly not sit well with Dallas fans if Schottenheimer wound up being hired over more qualified candidates like Saleh or Moore.
