The one silver lining about the Dallas Cowboys’ frustrating performance thus far is that they might end up picking earlier than usual in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Jerry Jones’ Cowboys have only picked in the top 15 twice since 2013, and they came out with a game-wrecking superstar on both occasions: Future two-time rushing champion Ezekiel Elliott at No. 4 overall in 2016 and All-Pro linebacker Micah Parsons at No. 12 overall in 2021. Barring a rapid turnaround, the Cowboys will likely pick in the top half of the first round in the 2025 NFL Draft.
There isn’t a shortage of elite prospects who would be a nice consolation prize for Dallas if they miss the postseason. Around the web, several top experts have the Cowboys selecting an explosive weapon that could take this offense to another level.
In his new NFL mock draft, ESPN’s Jordan Reid predicts the Cleveland Browns to snag Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders at No. 1. Interestingly, he has the Cowboys addressing the RB position by taking Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty with their fist pick in the 2025 NFL Draft:
“Jeanty is off to an historic start to the season, with the second-most rushing yards (1,248) and touchdowns (17) through six games in the past 20 FBS seasons. He has 841 yards after contact, first in the FBS and 255 more than the next-best rusher. The stats speak from themselves, and Jeanty would be an instant boost for the Cowboys as a runner and a receiver out of the backfield. Dallas is last in the NFL in rushing yards per game (77.2) and yards per carry (3.5), and tied for last in rushing TDs (two).”
Randy Gurzi of Sports Illustrated also projects that Dallas will take Jeanty with their first selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. Ditto with Keith Sanchez at The Draft Network and Sayre Bedinger of NFL Spin Zone.
The Cowboys certainly need help at running back after Jones curiously neglected the position in the offseason. Two-time 1,000-yard rusher Tony Pollard left for the Tennessee Titans in free agency, and Jones brought back a past-his-prime Elliott in free agency to challenge Rico Dowdle for the RB1 job.
The 20-year-old Jeanty already has 1,248 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns this season, averaging a ridiculous 9.9 yards per carry.
Cowboys Should Address The Offense At 2025 NFL Draft
A lot can change between now and the 2025 draft in April, but it already feels like Dallas’ best bet is to address the offensive side of the ball. Maybe they won’t take a running back in round one, but Jones has to bolster the interior offensive line and get another stud wide receiver to complement CeeDee Lamb.
The offense relies too much on Lamb and Dak Prescott. With Zack Martin getting up there in age, the draft may be an opportunity time to draft and groom his successor.
