A popular social media personality and internet detective believes he has uncovered evidence that a cursed sports franchise is about to end their stroke of bad luck…and it’ll be thanks entirely to Tom Brady.
During his interview with Stephen A. Smith at the Fanatics Fest in New York City last month, Tom Brady called Jordan Love’s Green Bay Packers one of the Kansas City Chiefs’ top threats to a three-peat.
Instagram user The Hockey Illuminati shared a video suggesting that Brady’s claim on the Packers might be good luck for the Toronto Maple Leafs, owners of the longest Stanley Cup drought. The Leafs last won it all in 1967 and haven’t reached the finals ever since.
So if Tom Brady’s suggestion about the Chiefs and Packers facing off in Super Bowl 59 becomes a reality? As The Hockey Illuminati points out, the only Packers-Chiefs Super Bowl showdown happened the same year that Toronto last won the Stanley Cup:
The Packers defeated the Chiefs in the first Super Bowl on Jan. 15, 1967. This game happened before the merger, with Green Bay and Kansas City representing the NFL and AFL in the big game, respectively. The Packers won 35-10.
Toronto has only won a single playoff series since the post-lockout era (2005-06). Despite a star-studded core led by Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander, John Tavares and Morgan Rielly, the Leafs haven’t come close to reaching hockey’s ultimate goal.
