The Houston Texans and Washington Commanders agreed to a stunning blockbuster trade on Monday afternoon, with Pro Bowl offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil headed to the nation’s capital.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Commanders are acquiring Laremy Tunsil and a 2025 fourth-round draft pick from Houston in exchange for 2025 third and seventh-round picks plus 2026 second and fourth-round picks.
Tunsil has two seasons remaining on the $75 million contract extension he signed with Houston in 2023. The Ole Miss product spent his first three seasons with the Miami Dolphins before getting traded to the Texans in a 2019 blockbuster, where he quickly emerged as one of the league’s best offensive tackles.
The trade is a bit of a surprise considering how awful Housto’ns offensive line was last season. Star quarterback C.J. Stroud was sacked 52 times in 17 games, and Lunsil has been Houston’s best offensive lineman for six years.

The Laremy Tunsil trade comes days after the Texans announced that they were releasing standout guard Shaq Mason. Clearly, GM Nick Caserio and head coach DeMeco Ryans would prefer to rebuild the o-line from scratch rather than continue building around the two veterans.Tunsil is a five-time Pro Bowler, earning the nod in 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024. Pro Football Focus graded him as the fourth-best pass-blocking offensive tackle (88.6), and he allowed only two sacks on 1,026 offensive snaps.
Laremy Tunsil Trade Is A Win-Win

For Houston, they get a bunch more cap space and significant draft capital to retool the roster accordingly. Though Tunsil’s departure leaves a void on the o-line, Caserio has plenty of avenues to find a replacement.
For the Commanders, GM Adam Peters can afford to go all-in after watching rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels carry the club to the NFC Championship Game. The Commanders already shored up one need by bringing in All-Pro wideout Deebo Samuel, so good on Peters for quickly addressing the OT and WR2 holes.
