The grandson of football legend John Madden has landed a job with an NFL team following a stint at Michigan.
Madden, the icon behind the name of the popular EA Sports video game, was a longtime coach in the league before going on to ace broadcasting. And it appears his grandson is looking to follow in his footsteps, as the Washington Commandersannounced on Tuesday that Jesse Madden is joining their coaching staff.
Jesse, who played for the Wolverines before working with the college football program, is now set for an NFL experience because he will be in the thick of things when the NFC side looks to improve on their impressive 2024 season next term.
The former defensive back was part of the National Title-winning team under Jim Harbaugh in 2023.
“Jesse Madden, the grandson of Pro Football Hall of Famer John Madden, will enter his first season in the NFL after graduating from the University of Michigan,” the Commanders announced via their official website. “At Michigan, Madden played quarterback in his freshman season before switching to defensive back. Madden was a member of the 2024 national championship team at Michigan.”

Celtics Lab NBA Basketball Podcast
Assessing the potential trade deadline impact on the East order
While the Boston Celtics may not make any major moves at the 2025 NBA trade deadline, but much of the rest of the league’s Eastern Conference will be looking to improve their rosters to try to get closer to the level of the Celtics and the Cleveland Cavaliers at the top of the conference’s standings. Which teams are gunning for major moves? Which ball clubs will look for medium-sized but impactful trades? And which East clubs will pull the trigger on retooling or rebuilding their rosters? The hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast, Alex Goldberg, Cameron Tabatabaie, and Justin Quinn, took a magnifying glass to the lay of the land with regard to the East order ahead of the deadline, which teams need what roles filled, and what moves might shake things up. Tune in to hear how things might look after the dust from this season’s trade deadline settles — and how it might shift Boston’s fortunes, if at all. Jesse, who has been hired as an offensive quality control coach, is likely keen on earning a head coaching role one day, which would have made his grandfather proud had he still been alive on the back of his legendary career.
John Madden was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to 1978 and guided the team to a Super Bowl win, having previously coached at San Diego State and Hancock.
Madden went 103-32-7 as the Raiders HC and had an unbelievable 10-year run as a custodian in the NFL. He later switched to broadcasting and became one of the most revered analysts on the air.
The former coach and commentator died in 2021 at the age of 85 and remains the face of the NFL’s flagship video game.
It wouldn’t surprise us if fans keep a close watch of his grandson’s career in the NFL following today’s announcement.
