Football fans are teeing off on Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys over his surprise choice as the team’s next head coach.
On Friday night, the Cowboys announced that they have named Brian Schottenheimer their new head coach. Schottenheimer spent the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator under then-head coach Mike McCarthy, though the latter was the offensive play-caller.
Schottenheimer joined the Cowboys’ coaching staff in 2022, starting out as a coaching analyst. Schottenheimer, who has nearly 30 years of football coaching experience, has never been a head coach before.
Needless to say, social media wasted no time ripping on Jerry Jones and the Cowboys for the curious decision to promote Schottenheimer to HC duties.
“Been a fan for 30 years. Even named my son Landry. This might be the breaking point of giving up as a Cowboys fan. What an embarrassment of an organization,” quipped a fan.
“I speak for every cowboys fan. 1. We all HATE Jerry Jones. 2. NOBODY wanted this,” said one fan.
“The franchise waited until 10pm at night to make this announcement because it’s such a joke,” wrote one fan.
“I never used to understand why so many people turned their back on the cowboys as fans but now I’ve never understood it more. Joke of a franchise,” said another.
“Lifelong fan here you have alienated me to the point that I no longer have an interest in the performance of this team. Don’t care about winning? Now, neither do I,” wrote a fan.
“The only people who will tune in are other NFC East teams. I’m sure this is exciting getting a guaranteed two wins each next year. After 52 years, most embarrassing time I’ve had being a fan,” remarked another.
It’s well-known by now that Jerry Jones has one main requirement when it comes to choosing his head coach: He has to really like the person on a personal level, otherwise get out.
He forced Jimmy Johnson out after the Hall of Famer led Dallas to consecutive Super Bowl championships in 1992 and ’93. He kept old buddy Jason Garrett on staff for 10 years (2010 to 2019) despite only three playoff appearances. Mike McCarthy got five years despite winning just a single playoff game.
Jerry Jones Continues To Alienate His Fans
Jones loves to spread word salad about wanting to win another Super Bowl. Unfortunately for frustrated Cowboys fans, Jones’ main goal is to just sell tickets and make as much money as possible.
Jerry Jones has made it clear that keeping himself in the GM seat and making the final decisions matters more than Super Bowls. Luckily for Schottenheimer, being on Jerry’s good side led to him getting the HC gig.
