That’s according to Alabama A&M, who initially announced that the player had passed away from a head injury he suffered during a game.
The school has since apologized for its inaccurate statement, calling it an “unfortunate occurrence.”
The announcement claiming the Bulldogs linebacker succumbed to said injury has since been deleted following the school’s athletic department revealing that an immediate family member had informed them of the player’s passing on Tuesday evening.
They cite a hospital rep who has since disclosed that Burnett is actually still alive. “Our staff acted accordingly to the wishes of the family member to inform the A&M community and beyond of this unfortunate occurrence. Upon hearing from a representative from UAB hospital this afternoon, we learned that he remains alive,” the athletic department noted on Wednesday evening, per CNN.
“We express our immediate regret for disseminating false information however, we hold complete joy in knowing that Medrick remains in stable condition.”

A GoFundMe page set up by Burnett’s sister, Dominance James, states the player was injured in a head-to-head collision during a loss to Alabama State in the Magic City Classic at Birmingham on October 26. He is said to have sustained brain swelling and bleeding.
The freshman is said to have given the crowd a thumbs-up while being stretchered away. However, his condition worsened a few days after the game.
Burnett registered five tackles in seven appearances for the Bulldogs this season after transferring from Grambling State.
